In January 2020, High Deductible Plan F was eliminated as an option for newly-eligible Medicare enrollees and replaced with High Deductible Plan G. The plan is identical to High Deductible Plan F except it does not cover the Part B deductible ($226 in 2023). As the name implies, High Deductible Plan G also has its own deductible. In 2023, the annual deductible is $2,483. While meeting the plan deductible, Original Medicare continues to pay its share (generally 80% of medical expenses).
After reaching the $2,483 deductible, High Deductible Plan G covers:
Hospitalization: Part A coinsurance plus coverage for 365 additional days after Medicare benefits end.
Medical Expenses: plan pays Part B deductible and balance of Medicare-approved expenses after Original Medicare pays 80%.
Blood: First 3 pints of blood each year.
Hospice: Part A coinsurance.
Skilled Nursing Facility Care: up to 100 days of skilled nursing facility care.
Part B Excess Charges: 100% of Part B excess charges.
Foreign Travel Medical Services: after a $250 deductible during the first 60 days, the plan pays 80% of the remainder of charges up to a lifetime maximum of $50,000.
Medicare Supplement High Deductible Plan G is a good alternative to the main Medigap plans for those looking to save on monthly premiums. Once the plan's $2,483 (in 2023) deductible is met, the plan is identical to Plan G. This means there are virtually no out-of-pocket medical expenses after the deductibles are met.
High Deductible Plan G can be a nice choice for those who may be tempted by the premium savings offered by a Medicare Advantage plan, but who want the freedom to go to any doctor that accepts Medicare.
